Building consensus amongst stakeholders

Deliberative or participatory approaches that seek to build consensus amongst stakeholders include methods for addressing collaborative goal setting, and consensus building. A citizen jury, for example, is a method for obtaining informed citizen input into policy decisions (Crosby 1995). Citizen juries can strengthen the democratic process and at the same time contribute to informed decisionmaking (Raadgever and Mostert 2005). In other settings, participatory rural appraisal (Chambers 1994) may enable community development decisions to be made on the basis of a shared understanding and harmonised interests. These methods are discussed in the Toolbox section on Participation and Engagement
