Step: Impacts of future climate changes on salmon policy

You are here: Home / Case studies / WE1 - Rhine basin
case: WE1
location: Rhine basin (Netherlands)
sectors: Water resources; Marine and Fisheries

Question addressed in this step

- What are the impacts of future climate changes on salmon policy? - What policies fail to meet their own objectives and need revision following the increasing frequency of low discharges in the Rhine and increasing periods of high temperature

Reason for chosing this question

- Droughts and low discharges on the Rhine in the future is a topic which needs more study because research has neglected these so far. - The impact of actual adaptation policies on low discharges is an open question as research has focussed almost exclusively on the prevention of floods.

What method has been applied

Model simulation runs finding frequencies of low discharges (with land use changes and climate change as variables)

Why was this method selected

The combination of the use of simulation models with inventory of policies through interviewing and literature surveys is necessary produced the required data for the adaptive tipping point analysis.
