Georg Feulner holds a master’s degree in applied mathematics and theoretical physics from the University of Cambridge (UK) and a diploma degree in physics from the University of Munich (DE). He obtained his PhD in physics at the University of Munich in 2004 with a thesis in the area of observational cosmology. Since 2006 he has worked at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK, DE), where he became a senior scientist, working group leader, and deputy head of research department "Earth System Analysis" in 2012.
In 2018, Georg held an Ida-Pfeiffer Visiting Professorship at the University of Vienna (AT). Since 2014 he has been teaching at the University of Potsdam (DE) where he obtained his Habilitation in climate physics in 2018 and was appointed as Privatdozent in 2022.
Georg's research focuses on climate modelling, deep-time paleoclimatology (in particular the climate on early Earth, Snowball Earth episodes, past greenhouse climates and climate changes during mass-extinction events) as well as present and future climate change.
Georg's research in climate science covers a broad range of topics. These include investigations of the modern and future Earth system, for example relating to the stability of the Atlantic overturning circulation, to the influence of solar activity on climate change, and to climate-vegetation feedbacks, but most of his research is focused on understanding Earth’s climate history and its relevance for the future. Georg is particularly interested in planetary habitability, the co-evolution of Earth’s climate and the biosphere, as well as past hothouse climate states and their relevance for our future in a warming world. In terms of methodology, his research is primarily based on numerical models of the coupled Earth system, complemented by data analysis and theoretical arguments.
