"Extrasolar Planets and Astrobiology"

The search for life on other planets is one of the main research questions of Astrobiology. The interdisciplinary research field of Astrobiology brings together Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biology and Geophysics. Since the first detection of an extrasolar planet around a main sequence star in 1995 multitude of planets have been detected including so-called super Earths. Main topics of the lecture will be the detection and characterization of these extrasolar planets focussing on the search for a second Earth. In order to find the necessary conditions for life on other planets we have to understand how life emerged and evolved on planet Earth. Then we will be able to define the conditions of habitability around other stars and to estimate the occurrence of life in our galaxy.
