Anpassung in Agrarsystemen“ am Potsdam Institut für Klimafolgenforschung (PIK) und des Fachgebietes „Agrarökosystemanalyse und -modellierung“ an der Universität Kassel. Er forscht interdisziplinär zur Verbesserung der Widerstandsfähigkeit der Landwirtschaft und zum Einfluss des Klimas auf die Landwirtschaft und wie diese auf sich ändernde Klimabedingungen reagieren kann. Seine Forschung richtet sich vor allem auf Maßnahmen zur Attribution (Bewältigung von Verlusten und Schäden), Antizipation (Frühwarnsysteme und Vorhersagen) und Klimaanpassungsmaßnahmen (Stärkung von Resilienz) im globalen Süden. Am PIK hat er mehr als 45 Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekte von der EU, dem BMZ, der GIZ, dem BMU, dem BMBF und Anderen eingeworben. Er arbeitet eng mit Institutionen zusammen, die in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit tätig sind, sowie mit anderen internationalen und regionalen Interessengruppen. Das Studium der Agrarökonomie und -wissenschaften absolvierte er an der Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. Davor arbeitete er als Landwirt auf verschiedenen Milchviehbetrieben in Norddeutschland.

Meine Forschung umfasst nachhaltige Landwirtschaft, Klimawandel, Landnutzung und -eignung sowie Ernährungssicherheit mit einem Schwerpunkt auf tropischen und subtropischen landwirtschaftlichen Systemen. Ziel dieser Forschung ist es, die Ernährungssicherheit, das Einkommen und den Lebensunterhalt landwirtschaftlicher Haushalte zu stabilisieren und zu verbessern.
In meiner Forschung untersuche ich die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf landwirtschaftliche Systeme und wie widerstandsfähige Anpassungsmaßnahmen diese Systeme stabilisieren können. Dies hilft, den Zusammenhang zwischen Landwirtschaft und Ernährungssicherheit sowie nachhaltiger wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung zu verstehen. Meine Forschung zur Bewertung der Anpassung an den Klimawandel unterstützt die internationale und nationale Politikgestaltung. Sie hilft auch Landwirten in tropischen Regionen, mit klimabedingten Risiken umzugehen, und unterstützt die Etablierung klimaintelligenter landwirtschaftlicher Systeme.
Ich entwickle auch landwirtschaftliche Prognoseansätze, die Informationen über Ernteerträge innerhalb der aktuellen Wachstumssaison liefern. Diese Forschung unterstützt die Entscheidungsfindung im Agrarsektor auf der Grundlage von kurz- und mittelfristigen Prognosen. Die Arbeit umfasst das Verständnis bevorstehender landwirtschaftlicher Klimarisiken und eine Analyse landwirtschaftlicher Systeme.
In meiner Forschung verwende ich verschiedene Methoden wie statistische und ökonometrische Methoden, prozessbasierte Modelle sowie maschinelle Lernansätze. Dazu gehört die Handhabung unterschiedlicher Arten von Eingabe- und Ausgabedaten mit unterschiedlichen räumlichen Auflösungen und Zeitrahmen wie Erdbeobachtungsdaten aus der Fernerkundung, Wetter- und Klimadaten, Landnutzungskarten,
Meine wichtigsten Forschungsschwerpunkte sind:

Analyse der Auswirkungen des Klimawandels und von Umweltfaktoren auf landwirtschaftliche Systeme, um die für eine widerstandsfähige und nachhaltige Entwicklung erforderlichen Maßnahmen zu verstehen.

Bewertung landwirtschaftlicher Anpassungsoptionen an den Klimawandel anhand biophysikalischer, sozioökonomischer und institutioneller Indikatoren, um Landwirten dabei zu helfen, ihre Nahrungsmittelproduktion und Ernährungssicherheit zu stabilisieren.
