Matthias Mengel leitet die Forschungsgruppe "Datenzentrierte Modellierung von sektorübergreifenden Klimaauswirkungen" zusammen mit Inga Sauer. Er ist Mitglied des Cross-sectoral Science Team des Inter-sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP).
Als Teil des ISIMIP-Teams beschäftigt sich Matthias Mengel mit der Modellierung von Klimaauswirkungen. Vorher forschte er an der Dynamik des antarktischen Eisschildes und Veränderungen des Meeresspiegels. Mit diesen Themen beschäftigte er sich bereits während seiner Promotion an der Universität Potsdam im Jahr 2015 und während seines AXA Postdoc-Stipendiums 2016-2018.
In seiner aktuellen Forschung beschäftigt er sich mit datengetriebenen Ansätzen, um die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf unsere Gesellschaft besser einzugrenzen. Dies beinhaltet methodische Fortschritte bei der Attribution von beobachteten Auswirkungen des Klimawandels. Der Meeresspiegelanstieg und seine Auswirkungen sind nach wie vor ein Schwerpunkt seiner Forschung. Im Jahr 2013 nahm Matthias Mengel an der Polarstern-Expedition ANT-XXIX/3 ins antarktische Weddelmeer teil. Während seines Studiums verbrachte er ein Auslandsjahr an der University of Nairobi in Kenia.
