The Geopolitics of Climate Change Risks

Climate change and climate policy influence economic development, capital and financial flows, trade and international relations, geopolitical affiliations, and national, multilateral and human security priorities around the world. Emissions reductions, and associated technological change, hold promise and keep evolving, but are imperfect or themselves associated with risks. In addition, emissions reductions must be combined with climate change adaptation to already observable and unavoidable climate change impacts, as well as coping with loss and damage. Inherent to this context are novel distributional and conflict potentials or consequences, encapsulated, for example, in the just transition concept, which supports equity in cost/benefit distribution in the transition to the green economy.
