PIK expertise at COP29 in Azerbaijan

11/11/2024 - The 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) takes place from 11 to 22 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The conference brings together delegates from nearly 200 countries, including leading scientists from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), to discuss the latest scientific findings and policy measures to mitigate the climate crisis.

The focus of this year's COP will be on reviewing and strengthening global climate action, particularly with regard to the goals set out in the Paris Agreement. A central topic is the definition of a new collective financing target to support developing countries in overcoming the climate crisis. Strategies for adapting to the unavoidable consequences of climate change will also be discussed. PIK scientists will take part in the following events:

A panel on carbon pricing in emerging economies, from the perspective of policy makers and academia of the Global North and the Global South. The introduction of carbon pricing often raises several concerns, including distributional impacts, competitiveness, and emissions leakage. This event seeks to highlight the opportunities, challenges, associated risk mitigation strategies and good practices of carbon pricing instruments in developing and emerging economies.

This event will provide an overview of the state of and perspectives for the greening of the financial system. The focus will be on solutions to enable action within the financial system and beyond for the transition to a net-zero and nature-positive economy. The discussions will bring together key actors and decision makers from the green finance community, including central banks, supervisors, standard setters, multilateral development banks, private sector firms and investors, with voices from research institutions and NGOs. The work of the Network for Greening the Financial System’s will provide a starting point for discussion of the main trends and developments in the climate finance space.

During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between Mr. Yerlan Nyssanbayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, and Ottmar Edenhofer, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). This MoU sets a framework for collaboration in climate research, adaptation, and science communication to bolster Kazakhstan’s climate resilience.
