At the joint kick-off event organised by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the WPKS, the Federal Minister of Education and Research welcomed the members of the new steering committee: In addition to PIK Director Ottmar Edenhofer, the researchers Holger Hanselka from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karen Pittel from the ifo Institute for Economic Research and Sabine Schlacke from the University of Greifswald are members of the WPKS.
Ottmar Edenhofer emphasises: Scientific policy advice is essential in order to meet the complex challenges of the future. As an interdisciplinary advisory body, we want to comprehensively analyse future key issues and provide policy-makers with options for action based on scientific evidence. In this sense, we see ourselves as a compass for German climate policy on the path to climate neutrality in 2045 and the subsequent net-negative target."
From 2024 to 2027, the interdisciplinary team of experts will work on specific key topics: the removal and storage of CO2 carbon dioxide removal, innovative concepts and technologies for decarbonisation in the building sector, climate change adaption as well as multilevel governance and climate federalism as challenges of climate law.
