Over its thirteen year existence, the re:publica has grown in participant numbers and renown alike. This year’s edition was inaugurated by Germany’s highest representative, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who called for a fair and democratic online debating culture in his speech. In the special focus on climate and sustainability, Svenja Schulze, the German Minister for the Environment, is a key speaker. And so is PIK-director Johan Rockström: “A safe future for humanity on Earth can only be achieved on a healthy planet. Climate stability depends on a transition from incremental to transformative change. The science is clear: The world needs to follow exponential pathways in all sectors of society. This requires deep innovation, social transformation and a fundamental policy shift,” Rockström summarises. Also from PIK, postdoctoral researcher Jessica Strefler is a re:publica speaker on climate change and its impacts on the economy.
