Schellnhuber met the current Minister for the Environment, Yamamoto Kouichi and gave a presentation at a hearing of the so called commission for the future, a committee with representatives from politics, science and the industry, who are meant to develop a long-term strategy on the future of Japan. Schellnhuber emphasized the necessity of phasing out fossil energy and explained the financial risks of nuclear energy.
Furthermore, he met with the heads of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) to explore scientific collaborations.
Japan currently holds the G7 presidency. In 2020, the former environmental minister will organize the Olympic games and claims to design them as ecologically sensitive as possible.
