The interactive discussion followed an annual strategic meeting of the High Level Advisory Committee to the Climate Justice Dialogue (HLAC) at the Potsdam Institute. Launched by Mary Robinson, President of the Mary Robinson Foundation and United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Change, the global committee consists of former presidents and other leaders from the fields of politics, science, business, civil society and academia.
At the public event in Berlin, the panelists discussed topics like development, human rights, ethics, inequalities between and within countries, further issues regarding divestment or health were raised by the lively public.Mary Robinson encouraged the mainly young audience to engage in climate justice and sustainable development and highlighted 2015 as "a year of incredible importance". “From the perspective of climate impact research, the poorest will be hit the hardest by a 4°C warmer world,“ HLAC member Schellnhuber said. Other members like Tuiloma Neroni Slade, former Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat emphasized the urgency for action: "Climate change is not an event of the future".
