“Prince Charles clearly takes up position for the protection of the rain forests” says Hans Joachim Schellnhuber. The fact that the British heir apparent as founder of the organisation “The Prince’s Rainforests Project” devotes his reputation to this cause is especially valuable for the preservation of these species-rich habitats and their contribution to climate protection. The scientists will report on the impacts of climate on the biodiversity of forests and possible combinations between climate and rain forest protection.
The Minster for Science of the Federal state of Brandenburg, Johanna Wanka, the British Ambassador Sir Michael Arthur and the President of the environmental organisation WWF Deutschland, Eberhard Brandes will attend the workshop.
On 26 May, a second Nobel Laureates Symposium in the “Global Sustainabilty” series will be held in London. The first symposium was convened by Schellnhuber in Potsdam in October 2007. This year’s symposium will be convened by the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership and held under the auspices of Prince Charles. About 80 leading scientists from various disciplines, among them more than 20 Nobel Laureates, will discuss the dimensions of the climate crisis and innovative strategies for solutions. One of the participants is the US Secretary of Energy and Nobel Laureate Steven Chu.
The second symposium will focus on measures to counter deforestation and possibilities to improve public uptake of scientific results as well as inferred policy recommendations.
„Prince Charles’ support of the second Nobel Laureates symposium is an honour for this young series and a big help for raising public awareness,” says Schellnhuber. The first symposium was held under the auspices of the Federal German Chancellor Angela Merkel. To conclude this year’s symposium, a new memorandum will be issued that comprises concrete action recommendations to counter the climate crisis.
