05/08/2013 - The Federal Governement of Germany today decided upon the appointments for the German Advisory Council on Global Change (Wissenschaftlicher Beirat Globale Umweltveränderungen, WBGU). Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and long-standing chair of the council, has been confirmed as a member. Being an independent scientific counseling body, WBGU is charged to develop recommendations for the governement. Its members will be in office until 2016.
Also confirmed as members are vice-chair Dirk Messner, director of the German Institute for Development Policy (DIE), Claus Leggewie, director of the Institute for Cultural Studies in Essen, Nebojsa Nakicenovic of Technical University of Vienna, and Sabine Schlacke, Professor for public law at the University Münster. New members are Frauke Kraas, professor of anthropogeography at Köln University, Peter Lemke, Head of Climate Sciences at the Alfred-Wegener-Institut for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Ellen Matthies, professor für Environmental Psychologie at the University Magdeburg, and Uwe Schneidewind, president of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy.
