The evening was initiated by the NaturTon foundation, a project of the Staatskapelle Berlin that promotes and supports environmental initiatives. Schellnhuber is a member of the Board of Trustees of the foundation, Quasthoff is one of their best-known ambassadors. Moderated by Andrea Thilo, a conversation ensued about the responsibility of the individual for the future and of the scientist in particular. Schellnhuber emphasized the importance of music to give hope and strength in the light of the risks of climate change. Quasthoff told some personal anecdotes, about the necessity to care about the environment and to prompt politicians to act, but also about encounters with foxes in the garden and the comfort nature can give. They agreed upon the fact that future generations deserve our commitment for a planet worth living. Sustainability was said to mean basically to adapt one’s behaviour for the sake of the grandchildren.
