It is occasionally possible to carry out a student internship at PIK. These are principally for 1) students already enrolled at a university who need to carry out a mandatory internship (Pflichtpraktikum) as a condition of their university’s study regulations, or 2) voluntary interns in an orientation phase, e.g. between a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. The latter are limited to a single unpaid internship of up to three months in length. For legal reasons PIK cannot offer internships to anyone not fulfilling these conditions. Please note that no payment is possible.
Such internships may be available for students from various disciplines (physics, mathematics, climatology, social or environmental sciences, informatics, etc.). Good software knowledge and programming skills are a prerequisite. Economists / environmental economists need a good knowledge in econometrics and theory.
Applicants for mandatory internships should preferably be enrolled in a Master’s programme, and thus already have completed about 5 or 6 semesters of university studies, and should be willing to spend at least 6 to 8 weeks at PIK. A guest contract for the purpose of completing a master’s thesis under supervision of PIK scientists may be possible in some cases. Please check the webpages of the individual working groups at PIK to see which groups welcome enquiries on thesis supervision.
If you are interested in an internship or a supervised thesis at PIK please be aware that we receive a large volume of applications and we can respond to and host only a fraction of applicants. As a first step, inform yourself on the PIK homepage about the research departments and working groups. Once you have identified the research department / working group where you would like to complete an internship or thesis, fill in the online form linked below. You will be asked to fill in and upload specific information. You will receive an automated confirmation that your application has been entered into the database. Due to the high volume of applications, we regret that we can only respond directly to those who may be invited to an interview.
