A 75 minutes Netflix film, 9 Planetary boundaries, 1 aim: "This Netflix documentary comes at the start of a critical decade for humanity. We are the last generation that can safeguard a relatively stable planet,” says Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK. “The stakes could not be higher. Globally, we must cut greenhouse emissions in half and aim to become nature positive by 2030. We can do it. A safe, just and fair world is within our grasp."
A preview of Breaking boundaries was shown yesterday exclusively to world leaders at President Biden’s virtual climate summit.
The docu follows the scientific journey of Johan Rockström, featuring also other scientists as for example PIK scientist Ricarda Winkelmann. It tells the story of the most important scientific discovery of our time - that humanity has pushed Earth beyond the boundaries that have kept Earth stable for 10,000 years, since the dawn of civilization.
The film takes the audience on a journey of discovery of the 9 planetary boundaries humanity must maintain, not just for the stability of our planet, but for the future of humanity. It offers up the solutions humanity can and must put in place now if we want to protect Earth’s life support system.
Johan Rockström volunteered his time to counsel Netflix on its recent climate commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2022. He will continue in this capacity as a part of the company’s independent advisory group of experts.
