Lisa Murken receives Hermann Eiselen Science Prize for excellent research

09/12/2024 - This year's prestigious Hermann Eiselen Science Award goes to Lisa Murken, a researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). In her work, the agricultural economist focuses on the complex relationships between land ownership and the ability of small farmers to adapt to climatic changes. The prize is awarded for outstanding scientific work whose findings contribute to improving the world's food supply.

The study “Land tenure in a changing climate”, authored by PIK scientist Lisa Murken, makes “a significant contribution to understanding the important role of land tenure in the context of climate change and its impact on the adaptation and resilience of smallholder farmers”, according to the fiat panis foundation, which awards the prize every two years.

Lisa Murken is co-leader of the working group 'Adaptation in Agricultural Systems' of the Climate Resilience research department at PIK. By analyzing household panel data, high-resolution weather data and mental models, her work has provided insights into how land tenure affects the adaptive capacity of smallholder farmers in the face of climate change. These findings have been published in several articles in leading scientific journals and make an important contribution to the topics of climate, land tenure and food security.

This year, the fiat panis foundation prize, which is endowed with a total of 30,000 euros, honored three excellent researchers and their respective work. In addition to Lisa Murken, Van Hong Nguyen from the University of Hohenheim and Custódio E. Matavel from the Humboldt University of Berlin were each awarded 10,000 euros.
