“The past reaches out its hand to the present to protect the future,” says Schellnhuber. “From data of earth´s history science gains insights for the future fate of our planet. Music bridges the abysses of time more gracefully and touches also those that have little interest in calculations or measurements.”
In 2009, members of the Staatskapelle created the charitable foundation NaturTon out of their own resources and under the auspices of Daniel Barenboim. Their initiative, the orchestra of change, combines cultural and climate protection engagement. The foundation supports global and environmental protection projects that sustainably serve to protect and maintain the earth in accordance with the social environment. In 2012, Schellnhuber was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the NaturTon Foundation.
The revenues of tonight will be incorporated into a concrete project: the association Eben!Holz e.V. intends to afforest rain forest in the Makira region in Madagascar. About 100 hectares of forests are to be afforested and protected in the long-term within the next years involving local people and the introduction of sustainable management. The project is supported by the Society of German Violin Makers – among the lumbers of Madagascar are also ebony woods from which violins are made.
