The flag hoisting was attended by Niels Hovius and Stefan Schwartze, Directors of the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ), Wolfram Rosenbach from the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP), and Karen Vogt from the Potsdam branch of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). The institutes had decided to hoist the flag, made in a workshop for the disabled, instead of setting a special violet illumination in order to avoid additional light pollution and energy consumption.
