Bolivian Guest Researcher from Brazil joins B-EPICC's Hydrology Team

January 2024: Right at the beginning of the new year, the B-EPICC project is happy to welcome Eduardo Noriega, a Bolivian scientist working in Brazil. During his one-month stay he and hydrology expert Carlos Fernández Palomino will focus on hydrological modeling of the Andes-Amazon.

B-EPICC Welcomes Ecologist Dr Erickson Urquiaga from Peru

September-October 2023: B-EPICC welcomes researcher Dr Erickson Urquiaga from the Institute for Nature, Earth & Energy (INTE) at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (Lima). Dr Urquiaga is an ecologist specialized on research in the Andean forests of Perú and will collaborate with B-EPICC’s forest and biodiversity researcher Sarah Bereswill.

Brazilian Guest Researcher Savia Santos joins B-EPICC

August-November 2023: Savia Santos is a researcher from the Cedeplar-Demography department at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil. The next three months, she will be working together with B-EPICC ‘s research analyst Dr Alec Thornton who is specialized in climate-migration-conflict.

B-EPICC Welcomes Peruvian ENSO researcher Cristian Febre

August 2023: Cristian Febre is a meteorologist who focuses on El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) research. During his stay, he will work with B-EPICC’s El Niño expert Dr Josef Ludescher.

B-EPICC Welcomes two Guest Researchers from India

March/April 2023: The B-EPICC project is grateful to welcome Santosh Kumar Muriki and K. Venkatramana from its longstanding project partner The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI) in New Delhi, India. They will use their stay to discuss their research on dynamical and thermodynamic features of precipitation extremes over the Indian subcontinent.

Knowledge Transfer on Monsoon Forecasting in India

January/February 2023: Prof. Elena Surovyatkina from the B-EPICC project went on a field trip through India to share her recent discoveries on monsoon forecasting with Indian meteorologists and authorities.

B-EPICC Welcomes Ethiopian Guest Researcher Tamirat Bekele Jimma

January - March 2023: The B-EPICC project welcomes its first guest researcher after COVID restrictions have been lifted. Tamirat Bekele Jimma is a PhD student from Addis Ababa University. He is affiliated with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Addis Abeba and his research focuses on the interaction between land surface, climate and hydrology in Ethiopia.

B-EPICC Scientist Sarah Bereswill Visited Research Institutions in Brazil, August & September 2022

25/08/2022 - 05/09/2022 - Following the B-EPICC kick-off workshop (23rd & 24th of August, 2022) in São José dos Campos, Brazil, PIK scientist Sarah Bereswill spent 10 days in Brazil to network with scientists working in the area of forest and biodiversity research. The research question B-EPICC addresses in the corresponding work package centers around the mitigation potential of secondary forests in terms of carbon sink and biodiversity recovery. For this purpose, Ms. Bereswill applies PIK’s Dynamic Global Vegetation Model ‘LPJmL-FIT’ to investigate dynamics of functional biodiversity and ecosystem services of forests under future climate scenarios.

Building Climate Capacities for - and with - Peru

01/11/2022 - PIK’s Brazil East Africa Peru India Climate Capacity (B-EPICC) project has hosted a ministerial delegation from Peru. The project has worked in, and with, Peru since 2018, where it is concerned with co-producing high-quality and user-oriented research and policy outcomes in a country facing the twin threats of severe flooding and drought, worsened by a changing climate.
