Girls' Day: students learn about research careers

On the occasion of this year’s Girls Day, 18 students from Berlin and Brandenburg visited the Potsdam-Insitute for Climate Impact Research. They were invited to get in touch with female scientists of the institute to learn more about career perspectives in research. The Girls’ Day was initiated in 2001 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and offers the opportunity to girls between 12 and 16 to explore career prospects in technical and scientific branches.
Girls' Day: students learn about research careers

After an introduction into the scientific history of Potsdam´s Telegraph Hill, the students visited the so-called “Wetterküche”, the institute’s little education center, to gain insights into climate science. Later on, the scientists Marlene Kretschmer, Lila Warszawski and Christina Roolfs gave impressions of their working life at the institute and stayed for lots of questions. At the end of the day, the girls experienced themselves how complicated international climate negotiations can be in a playful simulated climate conference. Within the diverse program, the students learned more about the topic of climate science as well as about career perspectives in research.
