The strategy and draft legislation are intended to allow the use of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU), transport and offshore storage in Germany. Protected ocean areas are excluded. The strategic focus for the use of CCS is on emissions that are difficult or impossible to avoid.
"We need both carbon capture and storage and carbon dioxide removal technologies if we want to achieve net zero CO2-emissions by 2045. However, the necessary technological openness must be combined with a comprehensive pricing of all pre-chain emissions. With the Carbon Management Strategy, the German government has set the foundation for achieving our ambitious climate targets - not only in Germany, but also in Europe", said Edenhofer.
