Boers heads PIK’s FutureLab "Artificial Intelligence in the Anthropocene" which explores mathematical approaches to investigate and model complex Earth system processes. The physicist is also an associate coordinator of the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project “Tipping Points in the Earth System TiPES”, which aims at better quantifying the tipping elements that are present in the climate system.
In 2019 Boers already received the Postdoc Prize of the State of Brandenburg for his publication “Complex networks reveal global pattern of extreme-rainfall teleconnections” that provided evidence that atmospheric wave patterns are a dominant trigger for extreme rain events.
Each year a total of 51 recipients are honored by the EGU for their outstanding contributions to the Earth, planetary and space sciences. Niklas Boers will receive the award at a ceremony in Vienna, scheduled for April 2021.
