Climate Change and Conflict: Prevention, Foresight, Resilience and Adaptation of Populations at Risk

November 2, Tuesday
10:00  11:00 GMT / 11:00 – 12:00 CET

This virtual event will demonstrate how effective engagement on climate change and security must build on integrated approaches and partnerships to facilitate action in regions vulnerable to climate-related security risks. It will discuss how policy and programmes must be grounded in comprehensive data analysis to allow for context-specific responses which take into account the multiple factors which influence the impact of climate change and conflict on communities and populations most at risk.

Climate impacts on food security in the Sahel - The need for science-based adaptation planning

November 4, Thursday
14:00 15:00 GMT / 15:00 16:00 CET

The Sahel region is particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts on human security, particularly food security. This hybrid event will shed light on the latest research findings and discuss ways of scaling up efforts to support evidence-based adaptation planning. Specifically, the event aims to showcase the projected impacts of different climate change scenarios on agriculture and food security, discuss adaptation pathways with a focus on highly food-insecure regions and demonstrate how science can inform and incentivize adaptation policy action.

Coherence, Climate Finance Mobilization and Collaborative Action for a Food Systems Transformation to Support Climate Goals

November 8, Monday
10:00 – 11:00 GMT / 11:00 – 12:00 CET

This event will bring leading stakeholders across the food and land use systems to highlight the importance of including these systems in climate discussions. The discussion will focus on integrating food policies across sectors and policy levels and developing market-based measures to tackle climate change and ensure food security for present and future generations. It will also raise awareness around the pivotal role of climate finance for food and land-use systems and the actions needed to increase funding.

Decarbonizing road transport

November 12, Friday
13:00 – 14:00 GMT / 14:00 – 15:00 CET

Decarbonising road transport – where do we stand and what’s at stake? European scientists and researchers, together with technology developers and industry pioneers, will present and discuss with the audience the challenges that they face and propose changes to policies and regulations that could help to accelerate the decarbonisation process. The European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) will address the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding road transport, shifting passengers and freight onto more sustainable means of transport, and improving the emissions performance of road vehicles. The Potsdam Institutefor Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the European automobile manufacturers' association ACEA, who jointly pursue a longer term science-business dialogue on the issue, will discuss progress being achieved with the decarbonisation of road freight vehicles. PeddleSmart will report on the potential for using innovative vehicles to decarbonise the carrying of people and freight, including waste or food, over the last mile.

Virtual Event of the COP26 European Pavilion. To access the event, please register to the European Union Side Events here.

Speakers: Wim van Saarlos (Chair of EASAC's energy program, Leiden University) as moderator, William Gillett (EASAC), Gunnar Luderer (Head of Energy Systems research group at PIK, also Technische Universität Berlin), Thomas Fabian (Director Commercial Vehicles, ACEA) Adam Reed (CEO PeddleSmart).
