10 New Insights in Climate Science

Patricia Espinosa, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will preside this session in which ten of the most important insights within the field of climate science 2021 will be presented. An international team of scientists including Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, as well as colleagues from FutureEarth, Earth League and World Climate Research Programme compiled the "must-knows" list based on an ever-growing body of evidence, with annual installments since 2017.

Climate impacts on food security in the Sahel - The need for science-based adaptation planning

The Sahel region is particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts on human security, particularly food security. This hybrid event will shed light on the latest research findings and discuss ways of scaling up efforts to support evidence-based adaptation planning. Specifically, the event aims to showcase the projected impacts of different climate change scenarios on agriculture and food security, discuss adaptation pathways with a focus on highly food-insecure regions and demonstrate how science can inform and incentivize adaptation policy action.

Coherence, Climate Finance Mobilization and Collaborative Action for a Food Systems Transformation to Support Climate Goals

Decarbonizing road transport

Decarbonising road transport – where do we stand and what’s at stake? European scientists and researchers, together with technology developers and industry pioneers, will present and discuss with the audience the challenges that they face and propose changes to policies and regulations that could help to accelerate the decarbonisation process. The European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) will address the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding road transport, shifting passengers and freight onto more sustainable means of transport, and improving the emissions performance of road vehicles. The Potsdam Institutefor Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the European automobile manufacturers' association ACEA, who jointly pursue a longer term science-business dialogue on the issue, will discuss progress being achieved with the decarbonisation of road freight vehicles. PeddleSmart will report on the potential for using innovative vehicles to decarbonise the carrying of people and freight, including waste or food, over the last mile.
