Topics of the conference are environmental indicators for climate change, its impacts on cities, and strategies for mitigation and adaptation. Climate change is to be examined on different space and time scales related to continents.
The aim of the congress is to strengthen the awareness of the impacts on different natural environments and socio-economic systems. It is destinated to scientists, decision makers, students and the interested public. At the beginning of the post-Kyoto-process the congress should be a reminder of the overall importance of climate change.
Angela Merkel is invited to give an evening lecture on “Climate Change – from Physics to Politics”. Further keynote speakers are, among others, the chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Rajendra Pachauri, the founding director of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam, Klaus Töpfer, and Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, director, and Ottmar Edenhofer, deputy director, from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).
The conference will take place under the auspices of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is organised in close co-operation by the Humboldt-Universität, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
