04/26/2017 - The Australian Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, Arthur Sinodinos, visited Berlin this week - and on the occasion, the Australian Embassy invited high-ranking guests to a science and innovation forum. Australia’s chief scientist Alan Finkel and the director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research Hans Joachim Schellnhuber discussed key science and innovation challenges and opportunities of the coming decade.
Australia and Germany exchange ideas on science and innovation

After an opening address by the Australian Ambassador to Germany, Lynette Wood, and a short keynote from the Minister, there was a discussion panel with Finkel and Schellnhuber. Finkel stressed that Australia wanted to establish an emissions corridor to limit greenhouse-gas emissions and said he was impressed by the strategic approach Germany had taken in pursuing its energy transition.

Schellnhuber talked about the risks of technological lock-ins and said wise governance was needed in the form of deliberate interventions. As an example, he named the establishment of a feed-in tariff scheme in Germany that helped drive down the cost of solar energy globally. He concluded in saying it would be a golden opportunity for Australia and Germany to join forces to win the battle of innovation.
