Remembering Mario Molina, Nobel Prize-winning chemist and MIT Institute Professor Emeritus

10/12/2020 - It is with deepest sorrow that the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) is grieving for Professor Mario Molina who died on 7 October at the age of 77.

Professor Molina, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and MIT Institute Professor Emeritus had been one of the greatest intellectuals of our time. He was a member of the Earth League, an international alliance of prominent climate scientists. Mario was also part of all the Nobel Symposia (Potsdam, London, Hongkong, Stockholm), and engaged in organising the 2021 Nobel Prize Summit in Washington.

As an outstanding scientist, he made seminal contributions in the discipline of atmospheric science but his work reached well beyond a deeper understanding of Earth system processes: throughout his life and lifetime achievements, Mario Molina had after all been an outstanding humanist seeking to improve the human condition in particular of the weakest and of those whose voice is seldom heard. He will be missed as an exemplary scientist, person, and friend.
