After a welcome address by the scientific directors Ottmar Edenhofer and Johan Rockström, researchers from various research departments, Future Labs and working groups at PIK presented their current work. Topics included planetary boundaries, possible climate tipping points, the management of global commons and the economic consequences of global warming. The importance of the institute as an interface between science and politics also played an important role. Reports were also given on the growing risks of forest fires and their impact on public health, as well as the latest developments in climate impact assessment.
In addition to traditional research areas, the focus shifted to new methodological approaches, including the use of big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence. And in light of recent developments, the challenge of populism in the context of climate policy was discussed. The new research department RD5, which operated as an independent institute under the name MCC until 2024 and has been part of PIK since the beginning of the year, was also represented for the first time. The event highlighted the diversity of research at PIK and the increasing interdisciplinary linking of scientific, economic and social issues.
