Lakes, ponds and aquifers are fragments of the water stock (or reservoir), which is an important component of the climate system. Water stock offers capacities to store, accumulate and release water. Climate change could reduce water stock by several reasons. Increasing evaporation, declining summer recharge of ground water, salinisation and intrusion of saline water through sea-level rise are only a couple of them. Increasing water utilisation by humans reduces water reservoirs as well. All things considered, water shortage by meteorological and hydrological droughts combined with growing water demand could lead to increasing water stock reduction.
