Specifications
- This field is optional.
- This field may be repeated.
- All fields may contain 1-80 characters of the printable ASCII
character set.
- The Role must be selected from the Personnel Role Valids, see Appendix A.
- The Role may be repeated per personnel group. In other words, a person
may have more than one role. In this case, the Personnel group needs only
to be specified once in the DIF with repeating Role fields.
- When the Personnel field is used in the DIF, the Role subfield is
required.
- Email, Phone and FAX fields are optional and may be repeated.
- The Address field may be multiple lines, each line containing 1-80
characters of the printable ASCII character set.
Recommendations
- For investigator, if one DIF represents an aggregation of data
produced by several investigator teams, either list the principal
investigator (PI), or use the Summary or Reference sections to point to
the location of a list of investigators and their relationships to the
data.
- Phone and fax numbers should be easily read by users. For example,
for USA phone numbers, use either (xxx) xxx-xxx or xxx-xxx-xxxx. For
other countries, begin the number with the country code: +44 123 45678
- The country should always be included in the address.
- If personnel retire, particularly investigators, it is desirable to
- keep their full name
- delete their phone, email and fax number
- in the Address subfield, state that they are retired or deceased,
keeping the name of their affiliation
Definitions of Personnel Roles
- Investigator: Person who headed the investigation or experiment
that resulted in the acquisition of the data described (i.e., Principal
Investigator, Experiment Team Leader)
- Technical Contact: A person who is knowledgeable about the
technical content of the data (quality, processing methods, units,
available software for further processing)
- DIF Author: The person who is responsible for the content of
the DIF. If the responsibility shifts from the original author to another
person, the DIF Author field should be updated to the new responsible
person.
