Abstract

The Global Agenda – International Vulnerability Assessments

Understanding ecosystem change, its causes and its consequences has been on the agenda of the research community for a long time. Also decision makers at various levels confronted with an ever growing number of environmental degradation problems have become increasingly interested in understanding these complex issues and in finding adequate responses to reduce the rate of change or its negative consequences.
The presentation will briefly review past vulnerability assessments, such as the IPCC or the Global Biodiversity Assessment. A currently on-going assessment, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), will then be explained in detail to give students a better understanding about the usefulness of such an exercise and how a vulnerability assessment can be carried out at the global level. The MA is an international process designed to meet the needs of decision-makers and the public for scientific information concerning the consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being and options for responding to those changes. The presentation will also review the use of qualitative/quantitative scenarios as a tool to alert policy makers to upcoming decisions and to systematically think through their consequences.
